Finisar Announces "Shadow Tap(TM)," First Network Tap
to Feature Zero Delay Failover as Well as Complete Support for Power Over
Ethernet (POE)
SUNNYVALE, CA, Dec. 08, 2004 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX) -- Finisar Corporation
(NASDAQ: FNSR), a provider of award-winning network solutions, announced
today the introduction of its new "Shadow Tap(TM)" product line,
featuring zero delay failover, dual power supplies as well as complete
support for Power Over Ethernet (POE) and the IEEE 802.3af industry standard.
"Finisar has earned an international reputation for its high-performance
network monitoring and analysis solutions," said Amol Kabe, Product
Manager for Tablus, Inc., a leading provider of information security solutions
that protect intellectual property. "With zero delay failover and
dual power supply capabilities, Finisar Shadow Tap solutions will enable
company networks to run continuously and securely 24/7 -- avoiding network
downtime that can significantly impact a company's reputation or financial
bottom line.
"Network Taps provide powerful, access points for passive monitoring
on 10/100, GigE, GigE Copper and Fibre Channel networks. Network Taps
greatly aid Intrusion Detection, protocol analysis and network monitoring
systems because they provide a secure, complete access point to line rate
network traffic without impacting normal network operations. Taps are
critical because they can be inserted between any two network devices
that need to be monitored (switches, routers, firewalls, servers, etc.)
and allow for continuous traffic flow with zero interruption. Network
performance is not interfered with in any way and taps free up span or
mirror ports on the switch. Whether used in half or full duplex mode,
network taps can provide visibility to all levels of the network stack,
enabling comprehensive analysis even for physical layer errors. Finisar's
taps eliminate many of the problems commonly associated with the use of
a switch span or mirror port for monitoring and analysis, such as:
-- Switch performance degradation
-- Use of a port for analysis or monitoring rather than LAN traffic
-- Inability to see physical-layer errors
-- Lack of full duplex support
In addition to the Shadow Tap's new features such as zero delay failover,
dual power supplies and complete Power Over Ethernet (POE) support, it
is also available in either a standard tap enclosure or PCI form factor
to support direct insertion into a server.
"Finisar's products have a central role to play in ensuring that
networks are up 24X7X365, secure, and investments retained," said
Scott Crawford, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Management Associates. "Finisar
Shadow Taps and its entire tap product line are instrumental in mission
critical Intrusion Detection, Intrusion Prevention and network monitoring
solutions. Shadow taps provide full visibility into networks while providing
zero network downtime -- even if there is power failure."
