Case Study: Remote Storage & Disaster Recovery
For many large companies, establishing a remote data center is an important
business and regulatory requirement. This Case Study describes how Anue
Emulators are helping one such organization meet its essential storage
needs.
The third largest auto insurance company in the US , with over 12 million
customers, purchased Anue's "M Series" combo GigE and SONET
Network Emulators in December 2004. They are emulating a DASD mirroring
configuration over 1400 - 2000 miles , as part of a disaster recovery/business
continuity backup solution from their midwest headquarters to their remote
data center in Colorado.
Delays and impairments experienced on an optical network of this size
can have devastating affects on storage and other software applications.
In particular, such problems can impact the performance of the network,
the integrity of critical business data as well as the recovery time in
case of a disaster.
Their WAN link is a SONET OC-48, and is provided by AT&T with a 99.85%
Error Free Seconds (EFS) performance commitment. This corresponds to setting
the Anue Emulator to a 6 x 10^-13 BER. Transmission delays experienced
by end users or software applications will be approximately 10ms.
Before emulating SONET transmission, the customer started with the Anue
Emulator in GigE mode. In a test environment, they connected the bi-directional
Anue box between two endpoint multiprotocol switching platforms. Both
Cisco's Optical Multi-Service Edge & Transport (COMET) and CNT UltraNet
Multi-Service Directors were tested. A Hitachi Data Systems storage array
is the target device. This purpose is to simulate delays and impairments
these devices will experience in a production network and quantify their
performance.
Anue Network Emulators are allowing the IT department at this company
to validate their remote storage solution in a lab setting before deployment.
The IT department is able to confirm that their complete backup plan meets
their business continuity and disaster recovery objectives given the approximate
10 ms transmission latency and the specified carrier service level. Without
Network Emulators from Anue Systems, this company would have to "wait
and see" how the production network affects its recovery and continuity
plans at the time of deployment. With Anue's Emulators, performance can
be repeatedly tested and characterized under different scenarios in a
lab environment, streamlining the roll out of new technologies and applications.
This saves time and money.
Following the GigE and SONET OC-48 tests, this customer plans to use the
Anue "H Series" Emulators to conduct 10Gbps interoperability
testing between McData, Cisco, Ciena and Foundry switching equipment.
