SAN Extension
Are you trying to link together disparate “Islands of Storage?” Do you
need to validate interoperability of SAN to SAN interconnects?
We can help …
Storage Area Networks (SANs) provide high bandwidth, low latency movement
of block data from servers to disk arrays or tape drives. For many reasons,
including business continuance applications, organizations today would
like to interconnect their SANs over wide-area networks for remote data
mirroring, backup and file sharing.
What is needed is an affordable, high performance method of interconnecting
multiple SAN islands over distance, which functions within today’s
datacom/telecom infrastructure.
There are a variety of ways to extend Fibre Channel or IP-based SANs over
existing MANs and WANs, including, just to name a few:
* Fibre Channel over ATM/SONET
* Fibre Channel over Ethernet (and then alternatively over SONET) = FCIP
* SCSI over IP (iSCSI) over Ethernet
* Fibre Channel over SONET (using GFP or a proprietary technologies)
In a mirrored SAN extension environment, the data mirroring process continuously
copies data from primary storage to a remote storage device. With synchronous
mirroring, data isn't written to primary storage until remote storage
confirms it has received the mirrored data. This process synchs primary
and secondary storage but also introduces latency because of the checking
process. (With asynchronous mirroring, the primary device does not wait
for confirmation, which could result in a data mismatch in the event of
a network failure).
In addition to latency, remote synchronous disk mirroring involves very
large volumes of data being transferred between sites. This means that
the MAN or WAN needs to perform to the same level as an in-building SAN.
High bandwidth and high latency … this is where Anue excels!
With Anue Network Emulators, you can simulate a live SAN extension solution
in a lab environment. It doesn’t matter if you’re emulating
Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet or SONET/SDH … Anue can do it all
on one hardware platform!
Anue Network Emulators:
* Generate impairments, including bit errors, frame/packet loss and total
signal loss
* Introduce delay of up to several seconds, depending on the line rate
* Operate at full line rate, regardless of packet size or data rate
* Are easy to use with an intuitive GUI and “plug and play”
setup
Storage networks have been elevated to the status of competitive weapons
in today’s world. Robust, redundant storage networks with geographically
dispersed data centers are becoming essential to ongoing business operations.
