VLX2500 3.125 Gb/s 16-port VME Switch

Physical Layer Switches - Electronic Patch Panels
The VLX2500 Crossbar Switch is a managed, non-blocking cross-point switch implemented on a 6U VME 64X card for digital signals from 65 Mbps up to 3.2 gigabits per second (Gbps).

A single VME card provides an 8-port switch solution. The addition of an 8-port expansion card provides a total of 16 ports, with the ability to connect any of its 16 outputs to any one of its 16 inputs. Each port input provides an option of data retiming or bypassing the retiming circuitry altogether. The protocol or structure of data routed through the switch is ignored by the VLX2500 and is unaltered by its passage through the switch. The VLX2500 can be used with many different types of networks and signals.

NOTE: The addition of the eight-port expansion card requires a total of two 6Ux4HP VME slots.

A single VLX2500 switch holds up to eight Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver modules. Each SFP transceiver module provides the physical ports for one input-output pair. While the cross-point switch itself can operate from 65 Mbps to 3.2 Gbps, different types of SFP transceiver modules impose different limitations on the range of data rates or the data format they will pass.

Hardware Features
* 16 non-blocking SFP transceiver ports (with optional 8-port expansion card)
* 3.2 Gbps/port baud rate
* 25.6 Gbps total bandwidth (51.2 Gbps with optional 8-port expansion card)
* Supports Arbitrated Loop, Point-to-Point, One-to-Many communication links
* Optional bypass of retiming circuitry for each port
* Retimed ports support short wavelength (850 nm), long wavelength (1300 nm), and HSSDC2 physical media options
* Small Form-factor Pluggable transceiver MultiSource Agreement (SFP MSA) compatibility for each port to ensure functional support for transceivers
* rom other manufacturers
* Flexible automatic I/O port fault isolation
* Multiple media options
* Hot-swappable SFP modules
* Cross-point configuration controlled across VME Bus or RS-232 port
* Front panel "Signal Detect" status indicators for each port provided
* Front panel "Power On" status indicator
* Front panel "Transmitter On" status indicator for each port
* Front panel "Heartbeat" status indicator
* Provides unique VME card base addressing
* Card Reset switch
* Password Reset switch
* Watchdog timer
* 32 KB Non-volatile SRAM (NVSRAM)

User Control Interface
The VLX2500 is controlled through an RS-232 port or via the VMEbus. The RS-232 port offers a command line interface that allows you to configure and receive status information from the VLX2500. The RS-232 interface uses an RJ-45 connector port.

The user-control interface has these features:

* On-line help for each command
* Configurable status display
* Configurable fault isolation (bypassing and/or alternative source attachment)
* Automatic restoration of the last configuration at power up
* No user intervention required at startup
* Four saved configurations
The VLX2500 front panel contains a reset pushbutton, an RJ-45 connector (RS-232 port), and Status LEDs. The Status LEDs include a "POWER ON" indicator, a "Heartbeat" LED and "Signal Detect" and "Transmitter On" LEDs for each port.

Operation
The VLX2500 has four main functions:
1. Route signals from SFP transceiver module inputs to the selected SFP transceiver module outputs.
2. Provide an out-of-band command line interface.
3. Provide status information.
4. Provide fault isolation when required.

Expansion Card
The optional VLX2500 Expansion Card provides eight additional SFP transceiver ports. These ports are operationally identical to those on the main VLX2500 card. All port input data can be retimed or nonretimed, depending on your configuration requirements.

Network data from the VLX2500 Expansion Card is passed to the VLX2500 through a board-to-board connector to a 16 x 16 cross-point switch. Any of the sixteen outputs can be connected to any one of the sixteen inputs.

The VLX2500 Expansion card mounts onto the VLX2500 using several standoffs. The combined Expansion card and VLX2500 requires two 6Ux4HP VME slots. Cutouts in the Expansion card allow for easy access to VME base address switches and a Password Reset Switch.

* Automatic restoration of the last configuration at power up
* No user intervention required at startup
* Four saved configurations
